Choga Mami

Choga Mami
An important prehistoric Mesopotamian village located about 70 miles (113 km) northeast of modern Baghdad. The site, which covers about 15 acres (6ha), may date to the sixth millennium B.C., making it a part of what scholars call the Hassu-nah culture. These early Mesopotamians, among the first who migrated onto the alluvial plains from the Fertile Crescent, are termed pre-urban, or "before cities," and typically inhabited small villages of about five hundred to one thousand people. Nevertheless, Choga Mami had a defensive wall and a stone tower that guarded one of the entrances. Broken pottery has been found in the ruins, along with figurines of women, though it is unclear whether they represent real people or goddesses. The houses were made of sun-baked bricks and had several small rooms. Choga Mami also contains the earliest-known example of an irrigation canal in Mesopotamia. It was excavated primarily by archaeologist Joan Oates of the University of Cambridge.
